How to Plan your Kitchen lighting

When creating a new kitchen design we find there are a few key areas that homeowners tend to look past . While there is a lot of attention paid to such things as worktops, cupboards, and hardware, one thing that often gets forgotten about is the lighting. It often ends up being more of an after-thought than anything else, but lighting can act as a fabulous design element in the space while still being functional.

When it comes to picking the perfect lighting for your kitchen, it can be a bit overwhelming since there are so many options. To help you wade through them all and ensure you’re going with the right fixture, here are some tips we like to offer our customers.

Use the Layers of Light Rule

We like to use a “layers of light” rule with our clients. Rather than just one overhead fixture that is meant to light all areas of the kitchen. We find that layers of light work much better. What this means is that you’re using a combination of lighting fixtures in different spots of the kitchen, with different wattages, and different purposes.

There are three main types of lighting that work well in a kitchen. These are task lighting, accent lighting, and decorative lighting. Ideally, you want to include all three. This will not only provide enough light in the kitchen, but it will help to create mood, atmosphere, and tie the design together.

Specialty Lighting Can Add the Pop You’re After

Another option well worth considering is something that is a bit more unique such as recessed lighting in the kitchen ceiling and over/or under cabinet lights. What these two types of lighting do is illuminate areas that are hard to light up with one traditional overhead fixture. Every inch of your worktop will be bathed in light, as will the entire span of the kitchen.

If you opt for recessed lighting in the ceiling, it may be a good idea to have a dimmer switch installed so that you can control how bright the lights are. This is a great way to turn recessed lighting into mood lighting.

What About the Floor?

Now if you want to go all out and really ensure your kitchen is well-lit. Then we suggest taking it one step further with kick-board lights. These are strips of LED lights that are installed on the kickboard found in base cabinets. They can then be programmed with a motion sensor. Each time a person walks by, they will light up the floor area. It adds dimension to the room, a warm glow, and makes it easy to navigate the space without having to turn on all the overhead lights at night.
